Greetings All,I have installed Windows 7 RTM on my Dell Vostro 1520 laptop, and work a little while everything was perfect. Suddenly my touchpad stopped working, and a check in device manager alerted me that I had a code 37. No problem, Ill use my USB mouse, and then thenext day it started detecting a Mass Storage Controller, and I have no idea what hardware this could be.
I downloaded and installed EVERY driver from Dell for my laptop, and the problem didnt go away, but it didnt see to be hurting anything, so I left it alone. Now this morning my video suddenly has a code 37, and the usual delete/reinstall/reboot/troubleshooting wizard have yeilded no results. Hi,Did you make any changes to your computer recently like installing/uninstalling/upgrading some software? This error code indicates that Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. Though you have tried reinstalling drivers i would suggest you to follow these steps and tell me the result.Uninstall and reinstall the driverUninstall the driver from Device Manager, and then scan for new hardware to install the driver again. You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver.
Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last timethat you set up the device. However, sometimes, it will open the New Hardware Wizard which may ask for the driver.

Umesh,Thanks for the quick reply. I have previous attempted both of the steps you mentioned, and neither would solve the touchpad/Mass storage controller issues, but would solve the video problem, that is until I reboot/shut down. Just last night, after using thelaptop in 1024x768 all day, I shut down. Shortly after that i realized I had forgot something and booted back up to perfect crisp video, and this morning its back to the same issue.
I will try the other suggestion regarding the BIOS before I give up and justwipe & reload. Alright, I hit up Dell and downloaded and installed everything for Windows 7 for the Vostro 1520.
I already had the latest BIOS installed (only had the laptop for about a month). So I booted into Safe Mode and I noticed that I now had a category of 'OtherDevices' in device manager, and no 'Display Controllers' category at all. So I chose show hidden devices and there was my display controllers. I uninstalled all instances of video controllers and reboot. The display adapter was found, rebooted, and now suddenlythe video is normal, the touchpad works, and the Mass Storage Controller is gone. Don't exactly know what the issue was, or what was done to fix it, but everything seems to be fine, for now.
I have rebooted twice since and everything is staying. Will keepyou guys updated.
I tried both suggestions, and between the two of you, something seemed to work. Thanks a ton for the advice, this will help sway me more towards picking up a copy for my home PC next week. Well, the problems continued, and I finally just said screw it, and wiped and reloaded, thinking this would remove the problem. Instead, though, I loaded 7 Pro, not needing the features of ultimate. And guess what.the same issues persist, and this ona clean installation with a different version of the OS.
Its a little different this time, About every 3rd or 4th boot/reboot produces no video, so I have to turn it off and do a cold boot, and every seems to work fine. The only common denominator here isthe laptop, more specifically the video chipset. What do you guys think? Specifically, I am trying to use the laptop to help rip backups of my DVD collection using Nero 7 (which I know is not certified for Win7). So for now, Im gonna dual boot with Vista. Well, everything was working just fine for a few days (except Nero 7 would not export with the audio/video synced, but thats neither here nor there) until I turned it on this morning. What a surprise.
So I went ahead and looked to see if I had that WindowsDefender update, the one in question, and to my surprise I had NOT installed that particular update. So I went ahead and ran Windows Update and installed the A04 BIOS (Windows Update loaded drivers for the video and touchpad.again) and rebooted, and everythingback to normal for now. From what I can tell checking the MS and Dell forums this seems to be a problem with pretty much all the Vostro xx20 models and Windows 7. Somebody (read: MS or Dell) need to figure this out since you can get a Vostro xx20 with Win7on it well, now! Im sure Dell is gonna be getting a lot of phone calls.
